…A brace wall code amendment moves ahead.

An amendment submitted by the AIBD to update the code requirements for submitting brace wall plans has been accepted by the IRC Code Development Committee. “The code contains confusing language regarding braced wall design, and suggests the building official is the one who “requires” braced wall design.” testified AIBD staff representative Mike Fischer. “It seems to us the intent of the code provision is to specify the necessary detail for those projects where the building official requires they be included in the construction documents.” The proposal submitted seeks to satisfy that intent and clear up the confusion. The proposal now goes through the public comment and ultimately will be voted on by the building officials later this year. If approved, it would be included in the 2015 IRC.

Another submission by AIBD requiring building officials to establish procedures to prevent improper or unauthorized duplication, reuse or dissemination of plans to the public was disapproved by the IRC Code Development Committee. From the hearings in Dallas , TX, AIBD General Manager Whit Peterson reported, “We received support from the AIA and several code officials and we believe there will be a place for this proposal in the future and it’s good to know we have allies.”

Nevada A.B. 434

An act relating to interior designers is revisiting certain requirements for an application for a certificate of registration to practice as a registered interior designer. The use of a degree from an accredited “architectural” educational program is being introduced as a substitution for required interior design experience and as the only prerequisite for qualifying to submit a written oath rather than appearing personally in front of the board. The proposal has passed the Assembly but has not yet passed the Senate. To read the full text of the act, CLICK HERE.
