…Mourning the collapse of Fallingwater.
The architectural community is in disbelief over yesterday’s reports that Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1936 masterpiece collapsed into Dear Run Creek. Engineer Robert Silman, who worked on the home in 1997, said in the NY Times, “The main cantilever isn’t a cantilever anymore.” The force of both the Master Bedroom Terrace and the Living Room Terrace crashing down is great enough to crack the stone ledge below. NY Times reporter Fred Bernstein wrote, “…an ironic end to a house renowned for its symbiotic relationship to nature.”
Even though the builder doubled the amount of reinforcing called for by Wright, “Still, he didn’t add enough steel to solve the problem.” Says Mr. Silman. He adds, “If it was still moving after 60 years, the inevitable conclusion is that it would eventually move far enough to fall into the river.”
Because it was Easter Sunday, tours opened three and a half hours later than usual and no one was in the structure through the morning.

The New Southern Home will be a wood frame house, using TimberStrand lumber. TimberStrand is a dimensionally stable, engineered wood product, made from recyclable material that resists warping, allowing for exceptionally straight, level walls. Some of the other green features include a Condensate Line to backfill the pool, water reducing fixtures, Velux solar panel skylights, and high-efficiency exhaust fans to pull condensation out of the home and garage.
