The 2013 Best of Show entry designed by Mountainworks, Cashiers, NC.

PASADENA, CA – The 2013 design competition winners were announced this past Thursday evening at an American Residential Design Awards gala dinner. For the second year in a row, the Best of Show Award is presented to the team at Mountianworks in Cashiers, NC. The award is presented by a group of five jurors who agree it is the best entry of all the category winners.

This year’s Global Choice Award is presented to Visbeen Architects, Grand Rapids, MI. AIBD Certified Member Wayne Visbeen and his team attracted 369 votes out of the total 1373. For the first time, three designers received over 200 votes in the open voting program which received only 238 total votes just two years ago.

Phil Kean, Winter Park, FL and Hobb’s Ink, Austin, TX won five and four awards respectively. Texas is this year’s top society with five different design firms winning a total of ten first and second places. Internationally, there were two awards given to a Canadian designer and one to an AIBD Member in Azerbaijan.

…David Ludwig named Designer of the Year!

PASADENA, CA – Arizona Certified Member David Ludwig is the AIBD 2013 Designer of the Year. Two members of the Society Officers Committee and two members of the College of Fellows chose David from among this year’s nominees for his dogged determination directing the Marketing and Website Committees through a long and detailed process of bringing AIBD to a higher level of banding and communication. The culmination of his and the Committees’ efforts can be seen in our fresh and multi-functional new website, in the style guidelines and the updated logos designed to give our name a consistent look whenever it appears, as well as in the editorial calendar for our new blog and forum that will monitor and participate in online group conversations relating to building design and building designers. “The Importance of these accomplishments to the promotion and development of AIBD couldn’t be overstated.” AIBD President Viki Wooster said.

ICORDSponsors62013_small…iCORD is a success!

PASADENA, CA – Colorado Society President Bernie Kern said it all when he posted in the AIBD Facebook Group, “Thank you California Society for hosting the Annual Convention. We had a great time. Everything was fantastic. The AIBD family is truly the best. See you soon at our next adventure.”

Maybe he didn’t say it all, California Society President Caroline Veerman responded with, “The convention was super fun — visiting with each of you during the breaks, lunch and night talks at the lounge, and of course, the Open Space Technology discussions. I took away more than I imagined, esp. our friendships. Wasn’t it so much fun?.. Still buzzing from all of it. Thank you for traveling to CA and making the event so worth while and the best ever.”

AIBD National President Viki Wooster sums it up by saying, “My mind is still soaring from all the convention experiences. Our architectural tour, the reception at the amazing Gamble house, the learning and sharing of iCORD, the laughter and camaraderie. I am inspired in so many ways.”

Thank you iCORD Sponsors!

The event included two traditional seminars, 16 open space breakout sessions and concluded with a 90 Design Ideas in 90 Minutes session presented by 12 different designers within the 90 minutes.

More information will be available in the coming weeks on the convention website www.AIBDconvention.com but meanwhile, the comments shared in all of the breakout sessions can be read at www.AIBD2013.pbworks.com.

…Interior design legislation in PA could limit building designer rights.

A bill to prohibit designers who are not NCIDQ certified from offering design services that are regulated by any Pennsylvania building code has been introduced in the Senate as SB 1060. The real reason for the bill is an attempt by the design lobby to limit its competition and make it more difficult for the majority of the design community to remain in business. If passed, AIBD members could still design the shell of a single family residence but not the interiors.

The PA Society legislative committee has been monitoring the legislative environment and this interior designers licensure issue.  This came across AIBD’s legislative watch email system last week and Don Dale, the committee chairman, jumped right on it.  NKBA has contacted AIBD and other allied organizations and the alliance will be mobilizing shortly.

“Our position is that we oppose the licensure of interior designers.  It conflicts with so many provisions of existing law, including our current right to practice residential design which is now explicitly exempt from licensure requirements.  We are already regulated; our work is regulated by the statewide building code.” says Micheal Stayman, AIBD PA President.
