October 24, 2016. What’s happening @AIBD_National?

Industry stakeholders report student happenings.

group of students with teacher in computer lab classrom learrning lessons, get help and supportAt a get-together in Washington, DC, staffers in charge of student activities from AIAS, AIBD, ASID, NAHB and USGBC met to report the latest goings-on within their student chapters. To begin, 2017 marks the 60th anniversary for American Institute of Architects Students (AIAS). In celebration, they are presenting AIAS Imagine: Top 60-at-60. This new honor will showcase the top 60 AIAS members and will culminate in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage with Walt Disney Imagineers on May 19-21, 2017 in Orlando, FL.

AIBD announced its success in 2016 with Design & Build Day at the University of Central Missouri. Executive Director, Steve Mickley confirmed that the first Tuesday in April is now known as Design & Build Day in AIBD and the students at UCM have already started planning their 2017 event. He also reported the desire to add one more school to the D&BD roster in 2017.

ASID reported SCALE: The ASID National Student Summit is all set for March 31-April 2, 2017 at the University of Oklahoma. Formerly known as LAUNCH, the one-of-a-kind, multi-day conference for interior design students will expand next year to include seminars for interior design educators as well as chapter training for ASID student chapter leaders.

USGBC stated they have “lifted boarders” when it comes to recruiting and qualifying student members. The first step has been to lift the maximum age restriction. Their next endeavor is to create regions and help their chapters host regional conferences.

NAHB has launched the “Alumni Association” which is designed to act as an advancement program helping student members transition into full professional membership. Also, October is now officially Careers in Construction month at NAHB. However, chapters can choose whatever month, week or day that best suits their schedule.

Seeking residential BIM wizards.

Become a part of an effort to train and credential design professionals in the areas of planning, designing, building and managing residential construction projects using BIM. AIBD member Joe Sirilla is leading the efforts to create a Building Information Modeling – Residential (BIM-R) certificate program. He has been chairing a committee working for months to outline a curriculum that will earn its graduating students a BIMR designation. Joe and the BIM-R team are proud to announce the program outline is complete and the team is seeking subject matter experts to write and present associated content.

The drafted syllabus is broken up into nine sessions – 1D, 2D, 3D through 8D, plus a session on legal issues. It is the team’s goal to compensate those who present one or two of the proposed nine sessions through the proceeds of the conferences where the content is delivered and certificates of completion are awarded. An official launch date has not been set, but the team envisions having the two-day certificate program ready to go sometime in April or May, 2017. To reach that goal, the programs needs to have all of its curriculum writer/presenters set and all of them working on their sessions by the end of November.

Which session would you be qualified to contribute? Contact BIMR@AIBD.org and request the detailed curriculum outline.

Optimize your website for search engines so that you get more clients (Part 2).

Optimizing Pages for Building Designers, Part 2: Page Content Optimization

Previously, we talked about how building designers can use Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to improve and increase business. This week, we’re going to look at some specific SEO rules and techniques that you can use to immediately start improving your site rankings in the search engines.

Entire books have been written on this subject, but for now, we’re only taking a look at two specific things: the meta data (last week), and basic page SEO (this week).

To give you an example of how powerful this is, one Thursday afternoon I optimized a page for a keyword that we were ranking 22nd in. That’s the top of the third page of Google. Hardly anyone ever goes that far back, so we weren’t getting much traffic.

I made all of the changes except for one (currently our blog does not have SEO friendly URLs), and by the following Monday, we had moved to the 6th spot in Google for the same keyword. That’s middle of the first page.

We immediately noticed an increase in traffic from search engines, just from these small changes.

If you’re excited to get started learning how you can make the same changes in your business website, click here to head over to the AIBD blog.

Next week, we’ll step out of SEO and talk about how social media services like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook can help you.

Learn technology to improve project management.

Converging Technologies for Improving Project Management

October 27th, 2016 11:00 AM PM PT

Some people are scared of “the cloud”. Maybe they think they’ll lose their data when it rains (you won’t; it’s not a literal cloud). Or maybe they think it’s unsecure (the reputable cloud systems are as secure as anything else you do).

The truth is, using the cloud is an efficient way to handle daily project management.

That’s all well and good, but if you’re not already using the cloud, how do you know what’s safe? How do you know what services are good and which ones aren’t worth your time?

Procore called on Scott Jones, Dexter + Chaney expert, to reveal how cloud technology can make your life easier by revolutionizing the way you work on (and off of) the job site!

blueturtle_videosLearn to assess clients and manage risk.

Free project management video series by BlueTurtleCM.

This project management video series provides building designers with resources, advice, and support on design fee proposals and contract negotiations.

This was a weekly series of short videos, most of which are about 10 minutes long, that is now complete and can be watched altogether or as spread out as you like. No need to wait for next week’s episode.

Last week, we talked about the eighth episode, which taught us how to calculate our design fees in a way that is fair to the client and you.

The ninth episode is titled Know Your Client and Manage Your Risk.

Clients are going to try to appeal to your humanity in various ways to pay less for their house plans.

Different types of clients have different motives and will use different tactics to convince you to let them get away with more than they should. This video will teach you how to identify and in turn deal with these tricks.

In this video, you’ll learn how to recognize and handle these three client types:

  • The “Family Friend”
  • The “Get A Good Deal”
  • The “I Like To Make Changes With No Additional Fee”

Next week, we’ll take a look at Episode 10 – Joint Venture, Sub-consultant + Partnership Agreements
.

These short videos are a smaller version of a recent series of workshops hosted by BlueTurtle Consulting. This series of workshops taught how to write proposals that will increase your fee levels, raise conversion rates, and eliminate scope creep.

You can attend the workshops in person for 8 AIBD Primary Credits. The current event dates and locations are as follows:

  • Washington D.C. – October 24
  • Baltimore – October 25
