AIBD’s 2017 Designer of the Year award goes to…

The Designer of the Year award is presented to the member who has made the most outstanding contribution to the Institute in the past year.

This year’s recipient, as with others in the past, is an accomplished designer and also a successful builder. He joined our certification council in October, 2012 and without hesitation, rolled up his sleeves and went to work immediately.

His first accomplishment has been to convert our Certified Professional Building Designer certification exam from paper and pencil to computer based delivery. Along the way, he learned the nuances of computer based testing and a completely new language used within the testing world. The phrase, “Eye So 17 – 0 – 2 – 4” now rolls of his tongue. He painstakingly entered each existing test item into the new system and launched online testing using our original eight paper and pencil tests in November 2015.

But his challenges were not limited to just learning a new language and computer skills, he studied other certification programs, attended workshops, and talked to experts and discovered the Institute’s shortcomings as a certification provider. He became the Council’s liaison to the Board of Directors, and for two years, worked to identify and change antiquated, unnecessary or indefensible policies. Leading up to the past twelve months, when he was elected NCBDC President and lead the Council through the process of developing a new CPBD exam. One that was created using accepted international standards, recognized public consent practices, and was delivered for the first time this week.

This year we honor someone who is a professor and a student. A communicator. A facilitator for change. But most importantly, a leader. This year’s Designer of the Year is Alan Abrams of Silver Spring, Maryland.

2017 College of Fellows inductees.

Kicking off the 2017 American Residential Design Awards Gala was a ceremony inducting new Fellows to the AIBD College of Fellows.

This year’s inductees are:

Janet L. Hobbs founded the award winning design firm, Hobbs’ Ink in 1987 and remains its principal designer. Janet has been a Professional Member since 1993 and a former member of the House of Delegates. She became a Certified Professional Building Designer in 2002 and is currently the External Affairs Chair of National Council of Building Designer Certification. Janet is Past President and continues to serve as a Board Member of the Texas Institute of Building Design.

She has many accolades related to community and industry service, yet somehow she’s found time to actually design houses, which is evidenced by the dozens of design awards she’s received in the Texas Institute of Building Design’s annual design competition, what used to be known as the AIBD annual design competition and now in the American Residential Design Awards.

Alan Kent has his Masters of Education and nearly completed a Doctorate in Education from Texas A&M University with a specialization in Computer Aided Design. He dumfounded his doctoral committee because they did not fully understand the future of computers in design, received a job offer and never completed his dissertation.

For AIBD, he’s been a member and a CPBD since 1984. Most recently he has chaired the AIBD’s Education Committee while serving as the Institute’s Internal Vice President. Before that he was Central District Director for four years, Chairman of the AIBD Presidents’ Council for four years has served in every office of the Texas Institute of Building Design and is still Treasure today. Alan has chaired the AIBD design competition, has delivered educational sessions at annual conventions and also has proctored countless CPBD exams.

The College of Fellows receive a medallion and certificate, and can be identified at formal AIBD events by their white jacket and medallion.

2017 College of Fellows Scholarship recipients.

The College of Fellows have two scholarship programs, the College of Fellows Scholarship and the Annette Farmer Scholarship. The latter is awarded to AIBD student members and the former is awarded to a relative of AIBD Professional members.

Our College of Fellows Scholarship recipient is Whitnee Webster from South Jordon, Utah. Ms. Webster attends, or will be attending, Utah State University Eastern. Her father is Professional member, Richard Webster, also from South Jordon, Utah, and a founding member of the newly formed AIBD, Greater Salt Lake City Chapter. Whitnee plans on becoming an architect and growing her family’s business.

The recipient of the Annette Farmer Scholarship is Nicole Crawford from Dallas, Georgia. Ms. Crawford attends, or will be attending, Kennesaw State University. She began her Student membership earlier this year and in doing so shared that she is passionate about architecture. Her goal is design spaces and facilities that have a positive impact on the people who experience them. When asked for an example, her first thought was a pediatric care facility.

50% off certification exam fees!

After two years of development, the Certified Professional Building Designer (CPBD) Exam 2.0 is set to launch August 1st. National Council of Building Designer Certification (NCBDC) set the Standard Setting Test price at $180, which is half of the current $360 fee for taking all eight parts of the current CPBD Exam, one time.

This discount is for a limited time and comes with a stipulation. Candidates qualifying for and taking the Standard Setting version of the CPBD Exam will not know their results for at least three months, possibly longer.

Candidates taking the Standard Setting version will be given three hours to answer 225 questions. That’s it. One test, 180 minutes. What is Standard Setting? An official research study conducted to determine a cut score (i.e. pass or fail score) for the test. That’s the reason for the long delay learning whether you passed. The actual passing grade won’t be determined until a certain number of attempts have been made. Somewhere between 35 and 50 test takers.

The faster we can get everyone registered and take the test, the faster everyone will become certified.

The CPBD Exam is delivered online. Candidates must have a reliable internet connection and a webcam. The test is open-book and any professionally bound reference is allowed. To qualify, candidates must demonstrate a minimum of six years’ experience as a building designer or a combination of education and experience. It’s all explained in the Candidate Handbook. The application fee is $50. The exam fee will be collected after you’ve been accepted and your test has been scheduled. Depending on how fast your references verify your experience, it could take a few weeks to be approved. You should start your application today.

There is NO STUDY material available for the Standard Setting test. The exam has been developed using an industry job analysis and countless hours of input from subject matter experts. The certification program is designed to recognize individuals who have demonstrated the experience, knowledge, and skills necessary to provide competent services as a building designer.

If you have questions, please contact Steve Mickley at 1-800-366-2423 or info@AIBD.org.
