Board approves two new chapters.

Last Wednesday our board of directors approved charters for the AIBD, Central Oklahoma and the AIBD, Charlotte Metro chapters.

Marc Wilson, submitting on behalf of the prospective Central Oklahoma Chapter, has also indicated the desire to host the chapter’s first official event on May 15th at Oklahoma State University. “With the new charter approved, I hope those plans continue to move forward and my schedule allows me to attend.” says Steve Mickley, AIBD’s executive director.

Kevin Holdridge, representing the prospective Charlotte Metro Chapter, submitted an application that included the signatures of two CPBDs, an architect, an engineer and a kitchen designer, the last three being new recruits. “This is a great group and we are already talking about organizing some educational events and volunteering events.” he added.

6-Tips for landscaping a storm proof yard

A solid downpour can have damaging consequences for your clients’ properties and the environment, and if you think storms have been worse lately, you’re not imagining it. According to the National Climate Assessment. there’s been a dramatic increase in severe rainfall over the past thirty years, meaning less of the steady rain plants love, and more flash floods and hurricanes. With the trend set to continue, home designers and builders should focus on making landscapes more resilient to extremes. With a few simple landscaping additions, you can mitigate damaging soil erosion and manage storm-water runoff, saving thousands on property damage when the next deluge hits.

  1. Swales
  2. Install a rain garden
  3. Specify heavier mulch
  4. Divert rain spouts
  5. Install a green roof
  6. Draining driveways

Designing with storm-water in mind will keep your [clients’] wallet, yard, and environment a little greener in the long run. And take some worries out of rainy days.

Florida Senate entertaining use of foundation permits to expedite construction. 

Senate Bill 1232, introduced in March, amends a large number of state requirements relating to the Florida Building Code. Notable amendments include:

  • s.468.609, F.S. which would expand the acceptance certain classroom training not currently being accepted and reduce the number of years of field experience required for inspectors and plans examiners from 5 to 3, as well as the number of years experience for building codes administrators from 10 to 7.
  • s. 553.73, F.S. which would require the permitted installation or replacement of a water heater in a conditioned or attic space to include a water leak detection device.
  • s. 553.79, F.S. which would authorize a building official to issue a permit for the construction of the foundation or any other part of a building or structure before the construction documents for the whole building or structure have been submitted; providing that the holder of such permit shall begin building at the holder’s own risk with the building operation and without assurance that a permit for the entire structure will be granted.
  • s. 553.908, F.S.; requiring local enforcement agencies to accept duct and air infiltration tests conducted in accordance with the Florida Building Code-Energy Conservation by individuals certified in accordance with s. 553.993(5) or (7) or individuals licensed under s. 489.105(3)(f), (g), or (i). The local enforcement agency may accept inspections in whole or in part by individuals certified in accordance with s. 553.993(5) or (7) or by individuals certified as energy inspectors by the International Code Council, provided that the inspection complies with the Florida Building Code-Energy Conservation.

California water restrictions affect building design.

Governor Jerry Brown ordered California’s first mandatory water restrictions as the drought gripping the state enters a fourth year.

Brown issued an executive order seeking a mandatory 25 percent reduction in use and a Information governmentrequirement that new homes feature water-efficient irrigation if the builder plans to use potable water for landscaping. He also called for 50 million square feet of lawns to be replaced with drought-tolerant landscaping and required campuses, golf courses and cemeteries to cut back on water.

“This historic drought demands unprecedented actions,” Brown, a Democrat, said in a statement.

The restrictions comes after the the California Water Resources Control Board in March prohibited residents from watering lawns within 48 hours after a rain storm and limited watering to just two days a week. Restaurants and bars can serve water only if asked by a customer. Hotel and motel operators must offer patrons the option of not having towels and linens washed daily. Residents and businesses face fines for failing to follow the rules.

According to homebuilders, Brown’s order isn’t a burden. They already face strict building codes that limit water use, such as requiring low-flow showers, faucets and toilets, said Mark Knorringa, chief executive officer of the Building Industry Association of Southern California.

“I don’t believe it will be a big shock,” Knorringa said in a telephone interview from his office in Irvine. “We’re already building the most efficient homes in the country.”

Submit your nominations for AIBD officers and directors.

The Board of Directors is the governing body of AIBD.  The board manages the affairs of the Institute and supervises its operations. More importantly, the Board of Directors has the commitment to help the Institute move toward its Mission and Vision by establishing and acting upon a Strategic Development Plan, setting up projects and programs, and coordinating task forces and committees.

Serving on the board is your opportunity to make a difference. As a leader, you have a platform to express your ideas about what AIBD should be and should do. More importantly, as a member of the governing body of AIBD, you are part of the vehicle of change.

As a board member, you bring your ideas to the table, speak up and take initiative. You work on what’s important to you, on projects that interest you, and where you can put your background and particular skills into action.

As a board member, you will attend monthly GoToMeetings during which the board members update each other on what’s going on. Be prepared to report, discuss, share opinions and ideas, and also to laugh. Board members meet face-to-face at the annual board meeting and member meeting, during the AIBD Convention. The personal interaction among AIBD members is something special and not to be missed.

Terms are one year, and the following are the positions and nominations to date:

  • Internal Vice President (Kevin Holdridge*)
  • External Vice President: (Karen Kassik-Michelsohn*)
  • Treasurer (Richard Emigh*)
  • Secretary (No candidate has been nominated)
  • Director (Chip Hudson*, Newell Cheatheam*, a total of 4 and up to 6 positions are available) 

* – Denotes the person is currently holding the position and they have been nominated by committee to serve a second term. Additional nominations may be made by two (2) Professional members, using the nominations link below.

Nominations for one candidate must come from two different members – one of which can be the candidate themselves. NOMINATIONS CLOSE APRIL 30, 2015.
