…Join the AIBD high performance home team

Come join AIBD’s new committee High Performance Homes. This committee is straight from the open space technology workshops and breakout sessions and Sam Rashkin’s Retooling the U.S. Housing Industry at the North Carolina convention. Our action planning has resulted in a group designated to provide designers access to a list of resources for high energy efficiency design and sustainability products. This group is temporarily set up on a wiggio.com group site and will transfer to AIBD’s website when it is available. The site is a discussion board specific to High Performance Homes which allows for Q&A discussion by all group members and access to a resource list that is continually growing. Contact AIBD site administrators Bernie Kern at bbkerndesigns@q.com or Caroline Loisos at caroline@loisosdesign.com to receive an email invitation to join this group.

…AIBD advises the vinyl siding industry

AIBD Executive Director Steve Mickley is one of three panelists discussing the state of vinyl siding at the Vinyl Siding Institute’s 2012 Fall Meeting in Washington, DC. Steve received over 300 responses to a survey distributed among the building design industry asking various questions about the use of vinyl and this Thursday he will be reporting his conclusions. “Almost half of those I heard back from are currently specifying vinyl siding.” Steve says, “But that means over half aren’t. I think the VSI is going to what to hear what both sides have to say.”

…No more excuses Mr. Banker

Austin, TX – On Friday, NAHB economist Robert Denk reported that U.S. home prices have stabilized and in all but one market they have begun to slowly increase. AIBD Executive Director Steve Mickley was in attendance during the Joint Business Management Committee meeting. “I hope this means that the appraisers and bankers will not have any more reasons to be hesitant to issue new home loans.” Steve said, “If home values are steadily improving, building new homes are a sound investment once again.”

During the home builder organization’s fall board meetings, Mr. Denk also reported the housing industry is currently at 39% of normal which is up from 27% in 2009. “Normal” is approximately 1.2 million new home starts per year which was last experienced in 2000 through 2003. He added it could be 2016 before the industry is fully recovered.
