The American Institute of Building Design now has representation on the BuildingSMART Alliance (bSa), a council of the National Institute of Building Sciences. A memorandum of agreement was drafted by the AIBD Board of Directors and approved by the House of Delegates at their mid-year meeting in February. A copy signed by NIBS’s President Henry L. Green, Hon. AIA, was received by the AIBD national office this past week.
In the document, the two parties agree to work together to further development and implementation of open BIM standards related to their area of professional interest. In addition, the agreement stipulates AIBD will be entitled to designate one of its members to occupy a seat on the bSa Board of Direction to help coordinate open BIM standards. AIBD Professional member Joseph Sirilla of Monta Consulting & Design in Altamonte Springs, Florida, has volunteered to serve as AIBD’s bSa liaison.

AIBD picked up 3 new members this past week; two new Professional members and one new House Plan Marketing Alliance member. This brings the yearly total (July 1 to date) to three new associate recruits, 26 new students and 33 new professionals. “Our goal is 100 new Professional members this fiscal year.” says AIBD Membership Committee Chairperson, Kevin Holdridge. “We have 10 more weeks and 67 more new members to go; doing the math is easy!” he adds.
Application fees waived!
The Louisiana Society, the Northeast Society (MA, ME, NH & VT) and the Georgia society have joined the ranks and waived their local application fees. That brings the count to 20 of the 22 AIBD societies who have reduced the first year’s membership investment during the 2014 drive. The House of Delegates suspended the national application fees during the drive and many states have reduced their local dues.
