…Work boots after Labor Day? Always in fashion.

(An editorial by Steve Mickley, Executive Director)

Will you be barbecuing today or “playing catch-up” at the office? According to new survey data from Bloomberg BNA and Beyond.com, many Americans will have the somewhat ironic pleasure of laboring on the day that’s meant to commemorate the “social and economic achievement of the American worker.” Believe me, I understand. I also understand the distinct opportunity we have to contribute daily to the achievement of the American worker – specifially, construction workers.

Much of my work as a designer was built in Florida using reinforced masonry exterior walls. I believe that by taking a few moments (in the air conditioning) to calculate building parameters and opening placements that fit to the masonry unit dimensions, the mechanics in the field could save hours (at least many minutes) by not having to continually pull out their concrete saws. By paying a little attention to standard material dimensions in my design, I felt I could communicate to the worker (not in air conditioning) that I was thinking about hers or his success and I respect their time.

Now, with CAD it’s even easier to “tweak” a set of plans to adjust by inches or fractions of inches with little to no effort. Taking that thought even further, the introduction of BIM not only provides a 3D visual representation but also provides ”4D” management, monitoring, scheduling and performance tools to construction managers and home owners.

We are the beginning of a glorious creative process. Our ideas are not only put to paper but brought to life by teams of other creative people. Our success depends on the labors and success of these other people. “If you wish [for them] to believe in you, you must first convince them that you believe in them” ~ Harvey McKay.

Have a great Labor Day!

…Another gem saved from the wrecking ball!

A Renovation of 1880s Victorian in downtown Santa Cruz.

SANTA CRUZ — When Al Delaney purchased the historic Williams House in 2012, it would have been an understatement to say that the once-beautiful Locust Street Victorian had fallen into a state of extreme disrepair. Built entirely from clear heart redwood and cut nails, the house was a true antique, but years of neglect meant that plaster was literally falling off the walls and ceilings, and the home’s stunning period details were brittle and disintegrated at the touch.

When we first walked in with the contractor and homeowner (potential homeowner at that time, actually) to inspect and evaluate the house, we knew from experience that behind the crumbling plaster debris, mysterious stains and toxic air that there was likely a good solid frame to work with,” said Zachary Craycroft of Craycroft Design, the award-winning architecture firm that designed the renovation. “But it was far from clear.”

AIBD Certified Member John Craycroft and Professional Member and Zachary, the father-son duo behind Craycroft Design, won Best in Renovation in the 2013 American Residential Design Awards for their work on the historic Williams House.
