…Thinking of the best way to thank our veterans.
An editorial by Steve Mickley
Less than 72 hours ago I had the honor of attending the Navy’s November 8th recruit graduation ceremony in Great Lakes, IL. Hundreds of brave men and women had completed their basic training – the beginning of their adventure as United States Sailors. I was especially proud to be there because one of those sailors was my son, Hayden. He shipped off at 0100 the next morning for Seabee training. He’s going to be a Navy builder.
Thanks to this experience, I’ve found a new appreciation for Veteran’s Day and how we can truly thank them for our service. Earlier this year, AIBD was a part of designing and presenting a new home to one of our wounded warriors by way of a live design competition at the International Building Show (VIEW VIDEO). We plan on doing this again for another one of our heroes this coming February. But I kept feeling like there was a better way to thank our soldiers, airmen, marines, sailors, and guardsmen.
Hire a Hero!
As an industry, possibly the most honorable way to thank our veterans is to offer them a job. So many of our returning veterans have highly advanced computer skills and have been trained to be quick learners. With the building economy improving in many parts of America, I encourage those of you looking for help to first seek out the huge pool of unemployed veterans. I quickly found a few websites with resources:
Even those with certain physical disabilities are viable candidates for the building design industry. Not to mention, affordable technology has made it easier than ever to work virtually from home. There may even be tax incentives offered to employers with veteran hiring programs. By letting our courageous young volunteers know that there are opportunities for them when they come home is the one of the best ways I can think of, to thank our veterans.
