…NCBDC exam looks to go electronic

A proposal to host the comprehensive portion of the NCBDC exam is expected this week. ExamSoft has met with AIBD Executive Director, Steve Mickley, and has analyzed the present Council testing procedures and exam items and will be working out a customized plan to offer the exam in an electronic format. “If the proposal and the implementation seem feasible, I will be arranging a presentation to the Board of Examiners on May 7th.” Steve reports.

Once implemented, the exam procedures offer candidates the option of using their own laptop computers to take eight of the nine sections of the Certified Professional Building Designer (CPBD) exam. The practical portion, which includes a design program and requires a series of hand drawn solutions, will still be offered in its present format. In addition to laptops, ExamSoft is currently BETA testing the use of iPads and predicts that option will be available in 2013. “ExamSoft has minimum requirements and if they can be altered to meet the current NCBDC exam offerings this would be a great move forward.” Steve said. “Offering the exam electronically reduces staff time, it increases exam security, it helps provide test results much faster, and it would open the door to hundreds of potential tests sites that are now not practical or affordable to use.”
