Maine focusing more on green home design.

Maine’s housing is some of the oldest in the nation. Over 30% of the current housing units were built before the year 1950.

The area is also highly dependent on fossil fuels, which are a finite resource. A survey of 545,000 households in Maine found that 336,000 of them use fuel oil or kerosene. About 600 households use solar panels.

Despite that, Maine is quickly becoming known for adopting and growing the Passive House movement. A Passive House is a high efficiency building with an extremely low energy cost.

One notable project is Village center, a recently completed affordable housing apartment building with 48 units, is the largest Passive House in New England. It’s also one of the largest Passive Houses in the country.

Another large Passive House is Bayside Anchor, which offers 45 affordable housing units.

Aside from offering affordable, sustainable housing, a goal of these projects is to inspire other parts of the country to get involved in the Passive House movement.

ardasiteA new year means a new ARDA.

2016 is coming to a close which means it won’t be long before we open entry submissions for 2017’s American Residential Design Awards (ARDA). Now’s a great time to refresh your memory of what makes a good entry by checking out 2016’s winners.

We have set up a page for you to view all of the 2016 ARDA Winners, including both ARDA and Grand ARDAs, Best In Show, and the Global Choice winner.

This year’s ARDA had 132 total entries from 39 different design firms. We increased non-member entries to 9%, compared to 5% last year and 2% the previous year. We also broke records with our Global Choice Award.

Actually, we blew our past records out of the water.

This year we broke our previous years’ records with 2400 votes, compared to last year’s 660 votes. This year’s Global Choice winner received 713 votes, and at one point held the lead by only 5 votes.

We’re looking forward to breaking more records next year.

What steps are you taking to find and retain excellent talent?

If you’ve watched our course, How to Hire the Right Way (with Lisa Schaffer), you already know the process to properly put out a job listing, interview, and hire a new employee.

But how do you keep them? How do you attract the right kind of interest? You don’t want someone who is coming to work for you because they want a job. You want someone who is coming to work for you because they want to work for you.

To attract and keep the interest of the best people in your industry, you don’t have to be Google, with a full organic kitchen, or Buzzfeed, with a mobile bartender. Though, those things might help.

Check out this Procore webinar where Suzanne Mayeur talks about what makes a company great to work for. There’s even a rumor she’s going to tell us one very important guiding principle that will make our job so much easier…

The webinar will be on Tuesday, December 6th, 2016 from 11am-12pm PST/2-3pm EST.
