October 31, 2016. What’s happening @AIBD_National?

Happy Halloween from AIBD!

Happy Halloween! It’s not very often the MondayMINUTE falls on a Halloween. In fact, it won’t happen again until 2022. Let’s seize the day and use this to have some fun.

We found this fun video on how to draw a haunted house! There’s still some time before the Trick-Or-Treaters show up at your doorstep, so you can make this one last decoration and hang it up!

Don’t forget to take your kids to the neighborhood that gives out the full size chocolate bars.

Seeking CPBD exam review volunteers.

cpbdexamsCome visit beautiful South Florida in December. We promise there will be absolutely no snow!

The NCBDC is seeking subject matter experts (SMEs) to participate in a two-day item review conference in West Palm Beach, Florida, December 8 & 9, 2016.

Our national team of volunteers tasked with writing new questions for the CPBD exam has helped the Council amass somewhere over 500 questions. We are in need of two or three additional volunteers to review them.

The conference budget includes all your expenses while at the conference – 3 hotel nights, airport transfers, food and beverage, etc, however we will need volunteers who are able to pay for their own airfare or mileage.

If you’re interested in participating, but not able to travel at this time, we also need up to 6 people who are experienced with Skype and can participate online without distraction or interruption throughout the two days.

You do not have to be certified to participate in this part of the exam development process. Be aware, participating will cause you to not be able to apply and qualify for certification until December 10, 2018.

For more information, contact the AIBD national office and ask for Steve Mickley – 800.366.2423 or

This is the last step towards developing the next generation of certification exams.

Your building design firm needs social media.

Over the last couple weeks, we’ve discussed why building designers need Search Engine Optimization (SEO), how to improve the meta data, and basic page SEO. If you read these and put the tips into effect, you’re already seeing more traffic movement.

There’s a lot more to do!

Social media is highly misunderstood from a branding point of view. People seem to think that the strength in social media is in posting links to your website, pictures of your work, and other things related to your brand. Hopefully someone retweets it and it goes viral!

While you should be sharing those things on your social media, I should let you know that the world doesn’t revolve around you. Harsh, I know, but when you understand that, you’ll start to understand marketing better.

The real strength in social media is in the engagement with your clients and customers.

I started writing a blog post on the AIBD blog for you, but it turns out there was more that I wanted to say than will fit in one comfortable blog post. I’m working on editing out a series that we will get started with next week.

Until then, here’s what you should do:

  • Set up a Twitter account with your logo, a short description of what you do, and a link to your website.
  • The same on Instagram.
  • The same on a Facebook page.

If you’d like to, go ahead and post something related to your brand. These accounts are strictly for your brand, so don’t post pictures of your kids, or breakfast, or vacation.

Next week we’ll get started with the “why” of social media and move on into the “how” in future posts.

Down East Chapter meeting for November 8th.

Last month’s meeting was unfortunately cancelled due to flooding from hurricane Matthew, but luckily, the Down East Chapter was able to reschedule their presenter, Len Vogel, for this month.

Mr. Vogel will be presenting on the National Council for Building Designer Certification (NCBDC) exam and certification process.

Chapter President Len Van Staalduinen shared with us that Mr. Vogel was a charter member of the AIBD North Carolina Society in 1989 and was Certified in 1991.  He served on the Education and Certification Committee of the National AIBD until the NCBDC was formed and split from AIBD. He then served on the Board of Examiners from its inception until 2015. He has also served two separate terms as Vice President of NCBDC and as President from 2010 – 2012, while assisting in the merger of NCBDC back under the umbrella of AIBD.

blueturtle_videosProvide more services to your clients without any extra work.

This project management video series provides building designers with resources, advice, and support on design fee proposals and contract negotiations.

This was a weekly series of short videos, most of which are about 10 minutes long, that is now complete and can be watched altogether or as spread out as you like. No need to wait for next week’s episode.

Last week, we talked about the ninth episode, which taught us how to assess a client and mitigate risks.

The tenth episode is titled Joint Venture, Sub-consultant + Partnership Agreements.

You’re a building designer, probably focusing mostly on residential and light commercial, but you could be making more money by upselling things such as interior design.

What? You don’t want to do interior design? You don’t have to. Partner with someone who does.

In this video, you’ll learn the three main agreements:

  • Joint Venture (JV) agreements
  • Partnership agreements
  • Sub-consultant agreements

And you’ll also learn when each type of agreement is appropriate, what issues will you need to consider, and where to acquire the standard agreements.

Next week, we’ll take a look at Episode 11 – Calculating Resource Based Design Fees.

These short videos are a smaller version of a recent series of workshops hosted by BlueTurtle Consulting. This series of workshops taught how to write proposals that will increase your fee levels, raise conversion rates, and eliminate scope creep.

You can attend the workshops in person for 8 AIBD Primary Credits. The current event dates and locations are as follows:

  • Boston – November 1

Click here to register for this last date.

If you have any questions, you can email or call 855-661-4270 (Toll Free).

Humor for your Monday!

Fun Word For Enjoyment Joy And HappinessTwo Certified Professional Building Designers were discussing the percentage of work versus enjoyment in romance. The first CPBD says, “I think romance is 50% work and 50% enjoyment.” The second CPBD shakes his head in disagreement stating, “No, I think romance is 25% work and 75% enjoyment.” Trying to reach consensus, they turn to the intern nearby and pose the question to him. “You’re both wrong!” the young intern replies, “Romance has to be 100% enjoyment. If there was any work involved, you would have me do it.”
