January 16, 2012. What’s happening @AIBD_national?

EMHE home by Ron Danne and Justin Lipe…The end of an era for a TV icon.

This is the first week in nine years that Ty Pennington will not surprise a family by running out of a motor coach screaming, “Good morning [Your] family!!”. Instead, it’s, “Bus driver…park that bus.”

Last Friday night ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition aired their 200th and last episode. The show concluded by building homes for seven families in seven days and a community park in Joplin, MO, a town wiped out by a tornado last summer.

“The show’s good works, education and entertainment will be missed.” Says AIBD Executive, Steve Mickley. “Fortunately, out of over 200 families, I was lucky to have helped touch the lives of a few while representing AIBD on three EMHE builds; South Central LA, Voluntown, CT and Hyattsville, MD. The last with my youngest son, Hayden.”

In fact, AIBD has touch the lives of more EMHE families. From the reports sent to the national office over the years, many have donated time working on projects and at least three members have designed and built EMHE homes. The first to our knowledge was Kevin Gray (FL) who designed this beautiful home for the Harveys (http://www.kevingray.com/gallery/articles/extreme). Then Bruno Hayn (CT) designed and constructed this home for the Girards (http://www.extremehomebybruno.com/). Finally, just this past summer, Ron Danne and Justin Lipe, working with P&D Builders, designed and built a home for the Rhodes (http://pndbuildersltd.com/photo-gallery/category/19-extreme-home). Displayed above, the 4200 square foot Italianate house was featured on a 2-part episode this past Christmas.

In 2005, the AIBD national convention featured Conrad Rickets as its keynote speaker. Conrad was one of the show’s creators and at the time was the executive producer. He told AIBD members in Memphis, TN, about scouting out the first home to be made-over. “We were intending to just create another home improvement show when I found a house that looked terrible but was in a neighborhood surrounded by beautiful homes…after stopping in front of the house three times I decided to stop and ask why.” Conrad shared with us. “It turns out the husband of the woman who owned the home had passed away and she couldn’t keep up the maintenance…suddenly, the premise for the show was discovered.”

Thanks ABC and Extreme Makeover Home Edition for inspiring an industry and a nation to help our neighbors.
