October 14, 2013. What’s happening @AIBD_National?

…Orlando Life recognizes AIBD designers.

Villa dei Gemelli, by Charles Clayton Construction and Phil Kean Design Group

Orlando Life magazine named a home designed by Phil Kean Design Group as its 2013 Home of the Year. The judges were impressed by the wonderful floor plan that blends indoor and outdoor spaces, an appropriate combination of traditional imagery and more up-to-date interior spaces and the great style, form and detailing.

Palazzo Lago, by Silliman Homes and Tony Weremeichik

The Home of the Year Runner-Up (tied), was designed by AIBD Certified Member Tony Weremeichik of Canin Associates. One judge was adamant that Palazzo Lago should have been the undisputed Home of the Year. And why not? From the stunning entry to the poolside cabana, the home features clean lines reminiscent of South Florida architecture from the ‘20s and ‘30s.

The New Southern Home, by NWC Construction and Keesee Associates

The other Home of the Year Runner-Up (tied), was designed by AIBD Certified Member David Pillsbury of Keesee and Associates. The judges reported David’s attention to detail was apparent in every aspect and although simple in concept, his design has a great flow and creates wonderfully detailed entertainment and private zones. The home also served as the New Southern Home, built-in conjunction with the 2013 Southeast Building Conference, and was inspired by the much-photographed Interfaith Chapel in Seaside, a neo-traditonal community in Florida’s Panhandle.

Phil Kean Design Group was also recognized for two specific awards. First, the Home of the Year just happens to encompass the Living Room of the Year. It’s an oversized space with an abundance of natural light and a large, barrel-vault ceiling highlighted by oversized dropped-rib panels. The center “feature wall” contains a large TV, a linear fireplace and two saltwater aquariums, while the glass wall opens onto a large covered lanai overlooking a waterfall pool.

Bay Point, built and designed by Phil Kean Design Group

Next, Phil Kean Design Group was awarded Master Bathroom of the Year with a spa-like master bathroom, which offers expansive lake views, highlights a second-story addition and a shower and toilet tucked behind the graceful waterfall tub doesn’t ellimating any distractions from the views reflected in the mirror, adding depth and dimension to the space.

The Rosalind House, by GAM Construction and MJS Custom Home Designs

AIBD Professional Member Michael J Sopoliga of MJS Custom Home Designs came up with the Kitchen of the Year. His gourmet kitchen is the heart of a charming home, located in the heart of a downtown historic district. An open and inviting space, it’s perfect for entertaining, especially around the showpiece center island, which boasts both seating and a convenient food-preparation area. The traditional theme suits the home, which pays homage to the homes from the ‘30s and ‘40s that surround it.

The judges included Patrick W. McClane, Smith and McClane Architects, Richmond, Virginia; Gregory F. Shue, Shue Design Associates, Holden Beach, North Carolina; and Jannis Vann, FAIBD, House Plan Resource, Woodstock, Georgia.

…NAHB Associate Members soon to qualify as HBA Presidents.

Mike Palumbo of E.R.I. Building & Designs in eastern Connecticut has served as the BAEC president in the past as an NAHB Builder Member. Now, more AIBD Members who are also NAHB Associate Members may be qualified to serve as officers of their local HBA. At a meeting this past Saturday in Colorado Springs, CO, the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Board of Directors approved a motion to allow the local HBA affiliates to change their bylaws and allow Associate Members to serve as officers of the local associations. Currently, the national bylaws require that all officers be Builder Members. However, many HBAs are expressing a need to expand their pool of local leadership. The option is up to each affiliate and none of the over 400 are required to allow Associate Members the opportunity to be an officer. It has been reported that Associate Members outnumber the Builder Members 2-to-1 in NAHB.
